Field report // Edition 01 // Training standard: closed-room retrieval under load

The second your eyes leave the room to look up a number, you have conceded the table.

1. The cost of dead air

You prepared for weeks. Then a question lands that is not on the page.

You built the valuation model, drafted the brief or reviewed the deck. Then an executive, partner or judge asks an unscripted question across the table:

"What multiple did that competitor trade at in Q2?"

"What page in Exhibit C refutes this testimony?"

"Which branch is driving that cost overrun?"

Your eyes drop. You scroll through tabs, a long deck or a trial binder, and the room waits.

Dead air costs you authority. The moment your eyes leave the counterparty, the room can read hesitation, a dependence on files and a figure you do not hold yourself.

2. The diagnosis: stored is not retrievable

You did not freeze for lack of preparation. The figure never left the file.

A spreadsheet stores by copying: complete, and asking nothing of you. Memory stores by encoding: deliberate attention at intake and a link to something already known (manual p. 6).

Sparrow, Liu and Wegner (2011) found that people told a computer would save a statement recalled fewer statements than people told it would be erased. The manual treats this as one input to the offloading literature (Risko and Gilbert, 2016), not as proof, and notes that Camerer et al. (2018) did not reproduce one result from that paper.

Working memory is small. Plan on about four chunks (Cowan, 2001). A meeting asks them to track the counterparty, compose your reply and watch the clock.

One payload, no place to sit

Four slots in a meeting (illustration, not data; manual p. 16). A payload with no place to sit is displaced first. That is the manual's inference, not a measured result; Beilock and Carr (2005) tested arithmetic.

3. The mechanism: spatial indexing and the 3-second glance

Move the payload out of your head and onto the room.

The method of loci stores one image at each fixed place and recalls the images by walking the route. It is over two thousand years old (manual p. 18). UNSCRIPTED turns it into three steps.

Step 01 // Substitute and peg

Turn the payload into pictures

Abstract terms become concrete nouns through the Substitute Word Protocol (pp. 40-51). Numbers become pegs from the 00-99 lexicon (pp. 65-104): an invented multiple of 14.2 becomes peg 14 (tower) and peg 02 (sun), linked in order (pp. 97-98).

Step 02 // Anchor (Protocol 03)

Bind each picture to a fixed station

Map ten stations within about two meters of where you sit: a carafe, a monitor bezel, a notepad corner (pp. 52-63). Your working memory then carries an address, not the payload (p. 16).

Step 03 // Retrieve (p. 62)

Rest your eyes on the station and read

In live use, rest your eyes on the anchor for three seconds and let the image surface. Nothing after three seconds? Move to the next station and return. Three seconds is the manual's working limit, not a finding.

Place works as an index because each station is its own cue, a route runs in one order and you already know your desk (p. 17).

Established (manual pp. 17-18)Loci is a trainable skill with a measured effect on word-list recall. Competitors at the World Memory Championship used a spatial strategy (Maguire et al., 2003).
Not establishedTransfer to meetings, exams or calls, and whether brain changes cause the gain. No study the manual cites tests either. So you measure your own: baseline on pp. 21-23, retest on Day 30.

4. Inside UNSCRIPTED (Edition 01)

A 140-page paper manual. No app, no login, no subscription.

Module 01: The Retrieval Diagnostic (pp. 1-24)

  • The Meeting Test (p. 7): list five real recall demands and count what you held with no device.
  • Five ways a second brain fails (p. 8): copy without encoding, the Notion Graveyard, lost sequence and more, each with a fix.
  • Baselines A and B (pp. 21-23): a 12-word sequence test and a digit test, scored.
  • Operator profile (p. 23): which tool to learn first.

Module 02: The 3 Applied Protocols (pp. 25-64)

  • The four image rules (p. 26): Swap, Scale, Multiply, Move; two at most per image.
  • Protocol 01, Linear Link Chain (pp. 28-39): ordered sequences such as incident response steps and pitch sections.
  • Protocol 02, Substitute Word (pp. 40-51): abstract jargon into concrete pictures.
  • Protocol 03, Spatial Loci and the Micro-Palace (pp. 52-63): ten stations, the blind walk and the three-second glance.

Module 03: The 00-99 Visual Peg Lexicon (pp. 65-104)

  • The sound key (p. 66): digits to consonant sounds, an idea first published by Pierre Herigone in 1634 (p. 2).
  • 100 pegs, 00 Seesaw to 99 Pipe (pp. 70-94), already chosen for you.
  • Encoders (pp. 97-100): long numbers, prices, decimals, percentages, ports and dates.

Module 04: The 30-Day Guided Palace Workbook (pp. 105-140)

  • Four blocks a day (p. 105): Build 5 min, Sweep 3, Review 3, Retrieve 4.
  • Six palaces in six five-day cycles: software and APIs, a clinical study aid, finance, an executive roster, Spanish and Japanese for business.
  • The spacing ladder (p. 12): reviews at 10 minutes, 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days. The gaps are the manual's own working heuristic.
  • Day 30 operator assessment (p. 138): about 40 minutes, retested against your Day 0 baseline.

Pages 70–71 of the manual: pegs 00 to 39

Inside the book

100 pegs, done for you.

Every number already has its picture. Five a day. About three minutes.

Each peg shows its number, the consonant sounds that spell it and one picture. Cover the words and name each peg from its picture, then cover the numbers.

Who it's for

Every day (15 minutes): Build 5 min · Sweep the pegs 3 min · Review 3 min · Retrieve 4 min, book shut.

Six cycles of five days. Each cycle: day 1 builds the palace, days 2 and 3 load ten items, day 4 builds a chain, day 5 covers five substitute-word terms.

  1. Software and APIs · Palace A: Desk · Days 1–5
  2. Clinical study aid · Palace B: Workshop bench · Days 6–10
  3. Finance · Palace C: Kitchen counter · Days 11–15
  4. Executive roster and clients · Palace D: Boardroom table · Days 16–20
  5. Spanish for business · Palace E: Living-room shelf · Days 21–25
  6. Japanese for business · Palace F: Wardrobe · Days 26–30

Five new pegs a day through Day 20. Days 21 to 30 add no new pegs; they are speed rounds. Day 30 ends with a 40-minute assessment you compare against your Day 0 baseline.

5. Measure your own result

The audit is yours. Day 0 against Day 30.

This page shows no customer case studies. UNSCRIPTED publishes measured results only when they are real. What the manual gives you is the instrument: Baselines A and B on Day 0, the same tests on Day 30 (p. 23), and the operator assessment (p. 138).

Baseline A measureRangeDay 0Day 30Target

Blank on purpose: you fill it in on manual p. 23. Targets are the manual's own working values, not norms. No result is promised.

8. Questions

Before you order

Will this work if I have an average memory?

The method does not depend on a gifted memory. It replaces it with a system: stations, concrete images and a retrieval cue. Your Day 0 baseline against your Day 30 retest gives you your own numbers. No result is promised.

Why a physical book instead of a PDF or a notes app?

You cannot open a notes app or a PDF during an audit, a cross-examination or a boardroom presentation. A paper manual keeps the training in the same no-screen condition you will perform in.

How much time does it take?

15 minutes each morning for the 30 daily sessions. Before Day 1 there is a one-time read of about three hours (easy to split across a weekend), and Day 30 ends with a 40-minute assessment.

What if I miss a day?

Don't double up. Run the missed day next and shift every later day one day later.

What do I need besides the manual?

An ordinary pencil, any timer and your desk. Nothing else is in the box.

Is this legal, financial or medical advice?

No. UNSCRIPTED is an applied professional training protocol, not a medical, psychological or clinical assessment or intervention. Pages that touch law or finance are study aids only.

9. The decision

Two ways into your next high-stakes room.

Option AKeep relying on second monitors, open tabs and slide appendices, and hope the unscripted question is on the page.
Option BSpend 15 minutes each morning for 30 days. Walk in with zero screens, keep eye contact and test yourself against your own Day 0 baseline.
