Training directive // Edition 01 // Standard: zero-device retrieval under load
Under stress, a payload with no place to sit is the first thing you lose. Give it one.
A 30-day physical training manual for medical students, licensing candidates and exam takers to hold pathways, algorithms and multi-stage sequences, then retrieve them with zero screens and zero notes. A study aid, not clinical guidance.

1. Forty-two seconds left on Question 42
You reviewed the card two days ago. You swiped "Good."
You are in a proctored exam hall or on morning rounds. The timer shows fifteen seconds on a multi-step cascade. Or an attending looks up from the chart:
"Walk me through the path of blood through the heart."
Your mind returns static. You guess between two options as the clock runs out, or you reach for a pocket app while the attending watches.
Under load, linear memorization breaks down. The manual's explanation follows.
2. The diagnosis: recognition is not retrieval
A card that felt easy is not a card you can recall.
Recalling from memory strengthens a trace more than reading it again (manual p. 11). In Roediger and Karpicke (2006), rereading led after 5 minutes; testing led after 2 days and after 1 week. Students who restudied expected to remember more than students who were tested. The manual's rule: do not grade a drill by how easy it felt.
Working memory is small. Plan on about four chunks (Cowan, 2001). An exam asks them to parse the question, watch the clock and weigh the options.
Four slots under exam pressure (illustration, not data; manual p. 16). A payload with no place to sit is displaced first. That is the manual's inference, not a measured result; Beilock and Carr (2005) tested arithmetic.
3. The mechanism: spatial indexing and the micro-palace
Separate the place from the payload.
The method of loci stores one image at each fixed place and recalls the images by walking the route (manual p. 18). UNSCRIPTED turns it into three steps.
Turn abstract jargon into a picture
Example from the manual (p. 45): the suffix -olol, a beta blocker, becomes a hollow doll propping a brick against a door marked BETA. The page is a study aid: it lists suffixes and classes, with no doses, no uses and no clinical advice.
Put ten stations in front of you
In an exam hall: a monitor frame, a scratch-paper corner, a pencil barrel. On rounds: a stethoscope bell, a clipboard clip, a penlight. One station, one address, one payload (pp. 17, 52-63).
Three-second glance, then read
Rest your eyes on the station for three seconds and let the image surface. Nothing? Skip to the next station and come back. Three seconds is the manual's working limit, not a finding.
4. The complete field manual (Edition 01)
140 pages of procedure and drills.
Module 01: The Retrieval Diagnostic (pp. 1-24)
- Baseline A (p. 21): 12 items, six concrete and six abstract, studied for 90 seconds, with no technique.
- Baseline B (p. 22): digit span, then a delayed 10-digit number.
- The Concreteness Ladder (p. 14): rate how easily a term becomes a picture, then convert it.
- The phonological loop (p. 15): why items that take over two seconds to say fade, and what to do about it.
Module 02: The 3 Applied Protocols (pp. 25-64)
- Protocol 01, Linear Link Chain (pp. 28-39): ordered cascades and sequences.
- Protocol 02, Substitute Word (pp. 40-51): including six drug-name suffix families (p. 45), study aid only.
- Protocol 03, Spatial Loci and the Micro-Palace (pp. 52-63): ten stations within two meters.
- The four image rules (p. 26): Swap, Scale, Multiply, Move.
Module 03: The 00-99 Visual Peg Lexicon (pp. 65-104)
- The sound key (p. 66): digits to consonant sounds.
- 100 pegs, 00 Seesaw to 99 Pipe (pp. 70-94).
- Encoders (pp. 97-100): long numbers, decimals, percentages, ports and dates.
Module 04: The 30-Day Workbook (pp. 105-140)
- Four blocks a day (p. 105): Build 5 min, Sweep 3, Review 3, Retrieve 4.
- Loaded sets: ten HTTP status codes, cranial nerves I to X, the path of blood through the heart and financial ratios (workbook, pp. 108-137).
- The spacing ladder (p. 12): reviews at 10 minutes, 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days, the manual's own working heuristic.
- Day 30 operator assessment (p. 138): retest against your Day 0 baseline.
Pages 70–71 of the manual: pegs 00 to 39
Inside the book
100 pegs, done for you.
Every number already has its picture. Five a day. About three minutes.
Each peg shows its number, the consonant sounds that spell it and one picture. Cover the words and name each peg from its picture, then cover the numbers.
Who it's for
Built for rooms where screens break authority.
Worked examples from the manual. Pages on medicine, law and finance are study aids, not professional guidance.

Every day (15 minutes): Build 5 min · Sweep the pegs 3 min · Review 3 min · Retrieve 4 min, book shut.
Six cycles of five days. Each cycle: day 1 builds the palace, days 2 and 3 load ten items, day 4 builds a chain, day 5 covers five substitute-word terms.
- Software and APIs · Palace A: Desk · Days 1–5
- Clinical study aid · Palace B: Workshop bench · Days 6–10
- Finance · Palace C: Kitchen counter · Days 11–15
- Executive roster and clients · Palace D: Boardroom table · Days 16–20
- Spanish for business · Palace E: Living-room shelf · Days 21–25
- Japanese for business · Palace F: Wardrobe · Days 26–30
Five new pegs a day through Day 20. Days 21 to 30 add no new pegs; they are speed rounds. Day 30 ends with a 40-minute assessment you compare against your Day 0 baseline.
5. Measure your own result
The audit is yours. Day 0 against Day 30.
This page shows no case studies or exam scores. UNSCRIPTED publishes measured results only when they are real. The manual gives you the instrument: Baselines A and B on Day 0, the same tests on Day 30 (p. 23), and the operator assessment (p. 138).
| Baseline A measure | Range | Day 0 | Day 30 | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Items recalled | 0-12 | 10-12 | ||
| In correct position | 0-12 | 9-12 | ||
| Concrete minus abstract | -6 to 6 | 1 or less |
Blank on purpose: you fill it in on manual p. 23. Targets are the manual's own working values, not norms. No result is promised.

8. Questions
Before you order
Is this allowed in a testing center?
UNSCRIPTED is a study method. You bring nothing extra into the room: you use what is already in your head and the fixtures already in front of you. Rules differ by exam body, so follow yours and do not use it to bring prohibited material into an exam.
Will this interfere with my existing Anki decks?
No. Keep your question banks. The manual's rule is to test yourself from memory and not to judge a drill by how easy it felt. Use UNSCRIPTED for the pathways, lists and constants that you keep missing.
Why a physical book instead of a PDF?
You cannot open a PDF in a closed-device setting. A paper manual keeps the training in the same no-screen condition you will perform in, and the workbook is written to be done with a pencil.
How much time does it take?
15 minutes each morning for the 30 daily sessions. Before Day 1 there is a one-time read of about three hours (easy to split across a weekend), and Day 30 ends with a 40-minute assessment.
What do I need besides the manual?
An ordinary pencil, any timer and your desk. Nothing else is in the box.
Is this medical advice or a clinical reference?
No. UNSCRIPTED is an applied professional training protocol, not a medical, psychological or clinical assessment or intervention. Pages that touch medicine, law or finance are study aids only; they give no doses and no clinical guidance. Always use your official references for patient care.
